“It seems patently obvious that Musk should pay a price for what he did. I don't think the death penalty is excessive, given that he caused 600,000 deaths, and that number is growing. …Like would anyone dispute that Hitler deserved to die after he killed 600,000 people? …[Maybe we should re-debate] "The Republican Party is Morally Bankrupt"… The last "The Republican Party is Morally Bankrupt" debate was in 2013 or 2014, before MAGA.”- Email from Democrat member of my debate club ( January 2026)

“Back when Obama 1st took office I advised anyone who would listen that it’s a "fool’s errand" to EVER view Republicans as people who can be dealt with as anything other than bitter opponents, with one side winning and the other utterly vanquished, just as Trump, Bannon, and Steve Miller see it.” - Reader Comment to National Review article (May 2026)

To which I respond: what kind of opposition party would you prefer, or would you rather not have an opposition party at all? By which I mean a serious opposition party, one whose candidates have a real chance of winning important elections.

Republicans are a diverse bunch, united less by ideology than an aversion to Democrats and a willingness to give Trump the benefit of the doubt. Right now Trump is calling the shots but that will be over soon enough.

The sentiments expressed at the beginning of this post weren’t about Trump anyway; both quotes referred to Republicans going back to the Obama years, when the Party was led by moderates like John McCain and Mitt Romney. That Party was quite a different animal than what we have now. But for some, it’s still the same old beast, one so evil that it must killed.
