I also included a chart addressing personal finances, because it sheds some light on why some people believe in the efficacy of personal control: the belief reflects lived experience. In this case, the mostly Republican groups reported less education yet higher financial wellbeing than the mostly Democrat groups. It makes sense they’d be more likely to attribute this accomplishment to personal effort and control. It also makes sense that they’d be strong supporters of the capitalist system, which I imagine facilitated their climb up the socioeconomic ladder.
